ARTH 14200 91 (Summer 2017) Introduction to Medieval Art
This course examines the art, architecture, and cultural production of the Middle Ages from the decline of the Roman Empire to the Reformation. During this period, works of art both constructed and challenged the world. With an awareness of the political, religious, and socioeconomic contexts in which medieval objects were produced, we will examine key topics such as performance, vision, sexuality, and the relationship between word and image. In order to so, we will draw on primary sources (in translation) and contemporary works of scholarship, and will engage buildings, manuscripts, devotional objects, sculptures, and textiles.
